IN FIRST TV ADS, DEMAND JUSTICE INITIATIVE CALLS FOR COLLINS, MURKOWSKI TO REJECT TRUMP’S ANTI-ABORTION SHORTLIST

New Ads Take Aim at Trump’s Anti-Roe Litmus Test to Pressure Pro-Choice Republicans Collins and Murkowski

WASHINGTON, DC—With Donald Trump’s nomination to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy looming, Demand Justice Initiative announced new ads today targeting Maine and Alaska, homes of moderate Senate Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who will play a big part in determining the fate of Trump’s nominee.

The new ads highlight the Trump shortlist’s hostility toward a woman’s constitutional right to seek an abortion. As noted in the ads, Trump has repeatedly asserted that overturning Roe v. Wade is a litmus test for all of his Supreme Court nominees. The ads urge Senators Collins and Murkowski to keep their word in protecting abortion rights and oppose all nominees on Trump’s anti-choice list.

The six-figure ad buy consists of this Collins-focused spot, airing in the Portland and Bangor markets in Maine, and this Murkowski-focused ad, which will air in the Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau markets in Alaska.

In the coming weeks, Demand Justice also plans to roll out radio, TV, and digital content urging Democratic Senators Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana to maintain their support for the Affordable Care Act’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions by voting against a nominee who would overturn these protections.

AD TRANSCRIPT

Narrator: If Donald Trump has his way, the next Supreme Court pick will turn the Court against a woman’s constitutional right to safe, legal abortion. Trump said he’ll only pick judges who’d overturn Roe v. Wade and outlaw abortion.

Trump: “I think there should be some kind of punishment.”

MSNBC Host Chris Matthews: “For the woman?”

Trump: “Yeah.”

Narrator: Senator Susan Collins[/Lisa Murkowski] could be the deciding vote on Trump’s pick for Justice. She claims to support a woman’s right to have an abortion. So why won’t she rule out voting for Trump’s anti-choice picks? Call Senator Collins[/Murkowski] and tell her to keep her word: Oppose Trump’s list of extreme nominees.
